Oscars 2017 Special: A Look Back at Pizza in the Movies

The highlight of the 2014 Oscars was definitely when Ellen Degeneres ordered pizza for the audience from Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizza.  In honor of this year’s Oscars, we came up with a list of our favorite pizza moments in movie history in hopes that maybe some day, the Academy will create a new category dedicated to the food’s appearance on the silver screen.  Here are our favorites, in no set order:

1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Long before Sean Penn was raking in Oscars and interviewing Mexican drug lords, he was playing rebellious stoners like Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And what better way for someone like Spicoli to “learn about Cuba and have some food” than to order a pizza to class?  There probably is no sadder face than Spicoli when he finds out he’ll have to learn about Cuba without eating the pizza he just ordered

2. The Net

The Net was WAY too ahead of its time in its depiction of ordering pizza online.  I don’t think it was this easy to order pizza until around 2010, 15 years after The Net was released.  And by the way, isn’t it weird that pizza.net still isn’t being used?

3. Back to the Future 2

It must be a recurring theme that Hollywood seems to misrepresent the convenience of living in the future because Back to the Future Part 2 also seemed to think that pizza would be able to be conjured up within five seconds.  Though we admit that we’d be little disturbed if you could open a package the size of a Peppermint Pattie and create an entire 12″ pizza by using a microwave

4. Wayne’s World

Two words. Wayne’s. World. “Contract or no, I will not bow to any sponsor.”

5. Eat, Pray, Love

Is there anything more hilarious than two incredibly skinny Hollywood actresses discussing how fat they are over slices of pizza as if they could ever relate to normal people’s lives?  Either way, Julia Roberts is right, you can’t just not eat a margherita sitting in front of you, especially when you are in Naples!!!

6. Mystic Pizza

This wasn’t the first time Roberts was in a movie scene about pizza.  In fact, one of her first movies, Mystic Pizza, not only took place around pizza join, but featured incredibly poor acting and a terrible script too!

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Imagine you’ve been assigned to write a comic book and you need to come up with something little boys will love.  You have no time to think of anything too clever, so you think: cute animals, weapons, and….pizza!  This was obviously the thought process when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created in 1984.  The 1990 live action movie might be one of the most pizza-centric movies ever created and definintely the most pizza-centric action movie ever

8. Saturday Night Fever

John Travolta may have moved on to doing terrible impersonations of Robert Shapiro in The People v. OJ Simpson and literally deformed his face to look like L. Ron Hubbard, but back when he was a dancing dynamo in Saturday Night Fever, he took part in one of the great scenes featuring pizza

9. Crazy, Stupid, Love

There isn’t much to say about this scene with Ryan Gosling from Crazy, Stupid, Love except, has there ever been anybody who looked this good eating pizza? Sometimes life isn’t really fair…

10. Spaceballs

One million space bucks by tomorrow?  Pizza the Hutt really was demanding (and disgusting) in Spaceballs!
